Taylor Fritz defeats Alexander Zverev to reach US Open semifinals

American Taylor Fritz defeated world No. 4 Alexander Zverev 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Tuesday to reach his first major semifinal.

It was the 12th-seeded Fritz’s fourth win over an ATP top 10 player in a major this season. It is the most wins by an American in a single year since Andre Agassi won five in 1999. Before this season, Fritz was 0-11 in majors against the ATP top 10.

The 26-year-old Fritz defeated Zverev in an epic five-setter at Wimbledon. This time he could count on the extra support of the home crowd, who supported him. Together with Frances Tiafoe (US Open 2022), Tommy Paul (Australian Open 2023) and Ben Shelton (US Open 2023), he is the only active American man to have reached the semi-finals of a major tournament.

Tiafoe will seek his second major semifinal appearance when he takes on ninth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the evening session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. A victory for Tiafoe would secure the first American finalist in a major men’s tournament since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009, when he lost an epic match to Roger Federer 16-14 in the fifth set.

Fritz’s 16 major tournament victories are the most by an American in a single year since Roddick (16 in 2009), also the last American to win a Grand Slam (US Open 2003).
