We’re in the midst of a new wave of Kidmania.

Fresh from the overwhelming reception Baby girl Nicole Kidman is back on our screens in a new six-part murder thriller series at the Venice Film Festival The perfect couple. Inspired by a 2018 bestseller by Elin Hilderbrand – also known as ‘the queen of beach reading’ (cc New York magazine) – starring Australian actress Dakota Fanning, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Billy Howle, Meghann Fahy and Midsummer‘s Jack Reynor in a glossy Netflix binge. Resistance is probably futile: sooner or later you’ll shall Join the rest of the big-headed Nantucket shoreline to find out what kind of shady business these beautiful people are up to. Clue: it’s murder, the most heinous.

These old-fashioned, clapboard-floored homes and their luxurious interiors are among the main attractions of a series hailed as one of the most the guilty pleasures of the year. But not all of them were filmed exactly where you might think. Here’s where director Susanne Bier (Birdhouse) and her cameras were focused on capturing the rich atmosphere of the show.

What Happens in ‘The Perfect Couple’

Kidman plays the super-rich and successful novelist Greer Garrison Winbury, long and supposedly happily married to Tag (Liev Schreiber) and living on an exclusive Massachusetts island. One of their sons, Benji (On Chesil Beach’s Billy Howle) is about to marry Eve Hewson’s less privileged Amelia Sacks. Greer is very unhappy about a rich boy/poor girl scenario that wouldn’t make it into one of her novels. Furious enough to be incredibly polite to her family and throw the kind of dream wedding that will undoubtedly only embarrass everyone involved.

Or so the idea goes, until a thoughtless person is murdered. Dream turns nightmare when everyone on the island is suddenly a potential killer, including Greer’s other sons, Thomas (Reynor) and Will (Sam Nivola), Thomas’ pregnant wife Abby (Fanning), and Amelia’s best friend Merritt (The White Lotus‘ Meghann Fahy). Maybe even wedding planner Roger (Tim Bagley). Hey, if you can throw a finger food buffet, you can throw a capital crime.

Where was The perfect couple filmed?

Both the Netflix series and Elin Hilderbrand’s novels are set on Nantucket, a picture book island off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The island is a two-hour, fifteen-minute boat ride from the mainland, making it a difficult place to transport an entire cast and crew. Instead, the Winburys’ massive mansion, Summerland, was filmed in Chatham, Cape Cod on the mainland. The Cape Cod landscape, complete with endless hydrangeas, was a perfect match for the family’s sprawling estate.

‘Because the majority of The perfect couple was filmed on location in Chatham, the production (has) an authentic Cape and island vibe,’ says Hilderbrand Boston.com.

Part of the show, however, was filmed on Nantucket. The second unit filmed around the island, including at the famous Bartlett’s Farm. “Hollywood (stunt pilot) Fred North was doing overhead footage in his helicopter and he texted me later and said it was one of the most beautiful places he’d ever filmed,” Hilderbrand says..
