US men’s soccer team on brink of historic Olympic knockout qualification

The United States men’s soccer team is on the verge of a milestone: potentially qualifying for the knockout stages of the Olympic Games for the first time since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Argentina, having overcome chaos and violence in their first match, now lead after beating Iraq, setting up a decisive match against Ukraine.

As the group stage draws to a close, with Spain and Japan already through to the quarter-finals, tensions are mounting among the remaining teams battling it out for a place in the last eight.

The US team, which has been back at the Olympics since 2008, consolidated a strong position after a 4-1 victory over New Zealand, despite an earlier 3-0 defeat to France.

US national coach Marko Mitrovic stressed the team’s dedication to giving everything on the field.

The U.S. will then face Guinea in a tiebreaker at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne. The U.S. is in second place, tied on points but ahead on goal difference, against New Zealand.

France, who top Group A, need only a win or draw against New Zealand to advance, potentially setting up a tiebreaker.

In Group B, Argentina tops the group thanks to a 3-1 win over Iraq. All four teams are level on three points and the country prepares for a decisive match against Ukraine.

Spain are already qualified in Group C, while second-placed Egypt need a draw against Spain to advance.

In Group D, Japan’s consecutive wins will secure their quarter-final spot, while Paraguay need a win against Mali to join them. Israel and Mali also need to win their respective games to stay in the race.
