American singer Mariah Carey and her sister die on the same day.

The mother, named Patricia, and her sister, known as Alison, left a statement over the weekend.

“My heart is broken to say that I lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey said on Monday, August 26.

“Unfortunately, my sister lost her life on the same day, in a tragic turn of events.”

The Grammy-winning singer says she feels blessed that she was able to spend time with her mother the week before her death and asks for privacy.

She has not released further details about the murder of her mother and sister.

Patricia is an 87-year-old former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American descent.

In Carey’s 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer details her complicated relationship with her mother, saying she caused her “so much pain and confusion.”

Carey, 55, says the competition can come between them. Professional jealousy “comes with the territory of success, but when you’re with your mother and the jealousy she reveals at such a young age, it’s particularly painful,” she added.

But she also spoke of the deep love she would come to have for her mother. She wrote for the book’s dedication: “To Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I believe is actually doing the best she can. I will always love you the best I can.”

In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, the singer said she was “definitely” affected by her mother’s criticism growing up.

She adds that she always thanks her mother for introducing her to music.

Carey’s relationship with her older sister Alison, who is 63, is also complex.

In her memoir, she writes that she does not have a good relationship with her mother and her brother Morgan, adding that it is “emotionally and physically safer for her not to have contact.”

Alison Bin sued Carey for $1.2 million (£909,780) after the publication of her memoir, alleging “immense emotional distress” and calling her “vindictive”.

His father, Alfred, died of cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.

They consider Carey one of the most successful singers in the world.

Her Christmas single All I Want For Christmas Is You is one of the best-selling Christmas songs of all time by a female artist.

She holds the record for most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 by a solo artist, with 19 songs. She has sold over 220 million records worldwide and is a judge on the American Idol competition.
