Team USA’s Paul Juda and Ryan Murphy, from the Chicago area, won a medal at the Olympic Games on Monday – NBC Chicago

Team USA’s medal count at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris rose to 20 on Monday night, thanks to a string of successes from male gymnasts and swimmers, among others.

American athletes walked away with several medals throughout the day. Here is a comprehensive list:

Men’s Street Skateboarding Finals

Men’s Team Gymnastics Final – Bronze

– Women’s 400m medley final

  • Katie Grimes – Silver
  • Emma Weyant – Bronze

Men’s 200m Freestyle Final

– Men’s 100m Backstroke Final

Fencing – Men’s Individual Foil – Bronze

Of those who won medals on Monday, two came from the Chicago area.

Ryan Murphy, a native of southern suburban Palos Heights, won bronze in the 100-meter backstroke, but that wasn’t the only reason to celebrate. As the medal ceremony drew to a close, he saw his wife, Bridget Konttinen, holding up a sign to let him know that their first child, due in January, will be a girl.

Team USA’s Jagger Eaton and Nyjah Huston took a podium finish behind Japan’s Yuto Horigome. Both skaters spoke about their performances after the event.

“We both thought — we both honestly thought it was going to be a boy,” he said. “And everyone — like everyone — we talked to thought it was going to be a boy.”

Murphy won three gold medals in Rio in 2016 and a gold, silver and bronze medal in Tokyo in 2021. He won his first medal in Paris after finishing third behind winner Thomas Ceccon of Italy and Xu Jiayu of China.

Meanwhile, the U.S. gymnastics team surprised the world by winning their first medal since 2008, taking bronze in the all-around team final.

The U.S. team exceeded expectations, fueled by incredible performances from every member of the relatively young team, including suburban Chicago native Paul Juda. The U.S. team — consisting of Frederick Richard, Brody Malone, Paul Juda, Asher Hong and Stephen Nedoroscik — finished with a score of 257.793, narrowly edging out China and Japan, widely considered top favorites for medals in the event but both suffering major crashes.

American gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik says he was glad to be the last gymnast with a medal on the line. Hear from him and his teammates after the U.S. won bronze in the team event.

Judah, a 23-year-old Deerfield resident, cleared a key vault routine for Team USA, then followed it up with solid performances on the bars and floor.

Despite a stellar performance from Judah on Saturday, who took on an unexpected new role as one of two American contenders for the individual all-around medal, beating out American star Brody Malone, the Americans had high hopes of moving past a lackluster fifth-place finish in qualifying.

Now they move on to the individual events, with Judah and Richard both competing in the individual all-around.
