Urgent manhunt for man accused of shooting 5 people in Laurel County

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – UPDATE: London Mayor Randall Weddle reports five people have been shot and are all in stable condition following a shooting on I-75 near exit 49 in Laurel County.

Three of the victims were flown from St Joseph’s in London for treatment.

The highway is now open again after being closed for hours.

KY 909 and US 25 in Laurel County are both still closed.

According to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, police are looking for Joseph A. Couch, 32. He is a person of interest in the shooting. He is considered armed and dangerous, according to the sheriff’s office.

Mayor Weddle says authorities are searching for Couch in a rural part of Laurel County and are confident he will be caught soon.

Lexington police are using their helicopter to assist in the search.

Officials want to assure citizens that they are safe tonight due to the large number of police units in the area.

However, they warn people to remain vigilant and stay at home.

Anyone currently in the area is urged to follow police, fire and traffic sign instructions for remaining diversions.
