Samaje Perine: Travis Kelce lateral, not written, you have to turn your head

Running back Samaje Perine hasn’t been a member of the Chiefs for very long, but he’s been around long enough to know that you can’t take your eyes off the ball when it’s in Travis Kelce’s hands.

One of the highlights of the Chiefs’ 26-13 victory over the Saints on Monday night was a play where Kelce caught a short pass on third-and-21 and then side-footed it down the field to Perine, who ran 15 yards to score a to create a fourth. -and-1 which the Chiefs converted on the next play.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen Kelce sideways to a teammate, as he did to Kadarius Toney for a touchdown last year, but the score was wiped out when Toney was flagged for offside on the play. Perine saw that play and he saw Kelce laterally during practice, so he was able to keep his “head on the turn” Monday night.

‘It wasn’t written, me can tell you so much“, said Perine via Sportradio 810 WHB. “I saw him do it a few times, he does it in practice, so I thought, ‘Let me stay in phase, just in case.’ And sure enough, I saw him change the ball and wind his arm back, and I was just ready for it.

Perine called it ‘crazy’ to be part of Kelce’s ‘backyard football’ and seeing the duo successfully complete the match will certainly give opposing defenses some more food for thought as they prepare for the Chiefs.
