Republican Liz Cheney endorses Harris over ‘dangerous’ Trump

Liz Cheney becomes the latest Republican to endorse Kamala Harris, warning of the “danger” Donald Trump poses.

The former Wyoming congresswoman and chair of the House Republican Conference said on Wednesday that she would turn her back on the Republican Party and vote for Ms. Harris in November.

In a speech to students in North Carolina, Ms. Cheney announced that she would not put an alternative Republican candidate on her ballot.

“I don’t think we have the luxury of writing down candidates’ names, especially in swing states,” she said.

“As a conservative, as someone who believes in the Constitution and cares about it, I have thought deeply about this and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only will I not vote for Donald Trump, I will vote for Kamala Harris.”

Mrs. Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is a conservative, pro-gun and anti-abortion politician.

‘Republicans for Harris’

Her support for Ms Harris comes after a number of ‘Republicans for Harris’ announced they would vote against their own party over Mr Trump’s selection as the Republican nominee.

Last week, 238 former Republican advisers, including Mitt Romney, George W. Bush and John McCain, published a joint letter urging “moderate Republicans and conservative independents” to support Ms. Harris.

Five Republican politicians and advisers spoke out against Trump and endorsed the rival party last month at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Among them were Adam Kinzinger, former Illinois Rep. and Olivia Troye, homeland security adviser to Trump Vice President Mike Pence.

Geoff Duncan, the Republican former lieutenant governor of Georgia, said: “To my fellow Republicans at home who want to get back to policy, empathy and tone, you know what the right thing to do is. Now let’s have the courage to do it in November.”
