The Internet Reacts to the First Minecraft Movie Trailer

The first official trailer for the live action Minecraft film—which has an annoying title A Minecraft Movie— has finally been released. On September 4, Warner Bros. posted what it called a teaser for the film on social media and the film distributor’s YouTube channel. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa are set to bring the best-selling video game of all time to the big screen, but this first look hasn’t exactly left fans excited about what to expect.

Set during the Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour,” the trailer introduces audiences to the film’s cast and the blocky world in which their adventure unfolds. Fans of the game will encounter many familiar items and creatures, such as the iconic green vine, a floating tree with a chunk of wood missing from its trunk, and plenty of strange-looking animals.

One of the biggest initial reactions from fans to the teaser trailer is dissatisfaction with the look of the film, which adds a strange CGI aesthetic to the iconic blocky textures of MinecraftMany have expressed concerns on social media about the film’s visual style, with one poster on X (formerly Twitter) who said that “we Minecraft film the sonic treatment because it looks like bread rolls now,” referring to the debacle surrounding Sonic’s original trailer design for his 2020 filma look that would be completely redone for the film’s release. Other critics of the film’s aesthetics call it worse than AI, or as bad as poor renderings of what is “realistic”. Minecraft“would be.

To make matters worse, the audience also brings up the following: Minecraft: Story ModeTelltale’s 2015 game that took a more narrative approach to the sandbox title. While it had its issues, Story Mode retained the iconic style of the original game, with blocky textures and characters that made it feel like it was set in a true story. MinecraftNearly ten years after its release, and with the trailer for the film not pleasing many fans, some see Story Mode in a new light.

But apart from all the hate about the way the Minecraft movie Look, there are those who recognize what the film actually is: a fun, if silly, movie aimed at kids. KotakuJohn Walker of his own said as much in his message on internet backlash to the film, short and sweet adults complaining on the internet tell you that the film is just not for them. He is not wrong! This film definitely tries to be fun enough to make kids happy.

I think there is a world where a Minecraft movie could have served fans old and young without being the most boring nonsense imaginable. But clearly this version of the movie does exactly what it sets out to do, whether we like it or not.
