The Ohio State football team enters Week 4 after taking Week 3 off.

The Buckeyes beat Western Michigan 56-0 in Week 2 and host Marshall at Ohio Stadium.

OSU and Marshall traded touchdowns early, with the Buckeyes’ score coming on a quick 68-yard pass and catch by Emeka Egbuka.

Ohio State last played Marshall on September 2, 2010, winning 45–7. However, that win was overturned due to NCAA sanctions.

Scoreboard:

4:32, first quarter: Ohio State quarterback Will Howard threw to Jeremiah Smith as Smith was running down the right sideline. Though the freshman made a remarkable attempt to retrieve the ball, it ended up in the arms of Marshall’s Josh Moten. It was the first pick Howard threw this season.

5:49, first quarter: The Buckeyes’ defense was much more successful the second time around. Ohio State forced Marshall back 3 yards on the Herd’s most recent drive. OSU had the ball at its 24 after a short punt that produced a fortuitous Marshall roll.

07:32, first quarter: Emeka Egbuka collected a short pass, turned and followed a column of blockers before launching into attack and blazing past Marshall’s defence to tie today’s game.

It was a score of 68 yards. Egbuka has caught a pass in each of the 27 games he has played in for the Buckeyes.

8:14, first quarter: Ohio State’s streak of eight straight quarters without allowing a touchdown was ended by a 1-yard run from Ethan Payne. The Buckeyes’ defense has been so dominant in 2024 that the drive also marked the first time in 10 drives that an OSU opponent has even made it to the Buckeyes’ side.

Marshall converted on all three third downs they faced. Thundering Herd senior quarterback Stone Earle was 5-of-6 passing for 43 yards on the 75-yard scoring drive.

Marshall called tails. The tails came up heads. Ohio State opted for a delay and Jayden Fielding would eventually kick into the south end zone to start the game.

Ohio State starting defenseman Tyleik Williams will not be available for Saturday’s game against Marshall.

Williams was listed as out on the availability report the Buckeyes filed with the Big Ten before kickoff. The nature of the injury or illness was not specified. During warmups, Williams jogged around with his teammates, though he wasn’t wearing pads and sat out position/team drills.

The absence leaves them without one of their best defensive linemen, whose 1.5 sacks are tied with JT Tuimoloau for the most among the Buckeyes through two games

In a season that saw him named to the All-Big Ten team as a junior last fall, Williams led Ohio State’s linemen with 53 tackles and is the best again this year with nine.

His 300-pound tackle makes him a challenge for opposing offensive linemen to block.

Instead of Williams, the Buckeyes likely expect Kayden McDonald or Hero Kanu to start alongside Ty Hamilton.

While Kanu is the most experienced returning reserve defensive tackle, McDonald has also impressed the staff, playing 31 snaps in the wins over Akron and Western Michigan, nearly twice as many as the reserve interior linemen, according to Pro Football Focus. Kanu has logged 16.

Returning from an inactive week, the Buckeyes are mostly healthy. Williams is the only scholarship player unavailable against Marshall.

Donovan Jackson, the starting left guard who was out the first two weeks with an undisclosed injury, is still on track to make his season debut.

Jayden Bonsu, a freshman safety, and Devontae Armstrong, a freshman offensive lineman, are also available for the first time.

Ohio State 52, Marshall 7: Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch says, “The Thundering Herd have shown some explosiveness in the run game, but a quarterback with a 44% completion percentage doesn’t bode well against the Buckeyes’ suffocating defense. Consider this a third straight preseason before Big Ten play begins next week.”

Ohio State 48, Marshall 0: Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch says: “The story to watch is whether the Buckeyes can shut out a second straight opponent, a feat they last accomplished in 2009 when they held Toledo and Illinois scoreless in consecutive weeks. It’s a real possibility given the state of Marshall’s offense, which ranks near the bottom of the Football Bowl Subdivision according to the most advanced metrics. They rank 94th in expected points added (EPA) per game.”

Ohio State 56, Marshall 7: Rob Oller of The Columbus Dispatch said: “Now that Ohio State has gotten the hang of starting fast — heads are still turning at Western Michigan — I expect the Buckeyes to go from 0 to 60 mph in a jiffy every week, or at least until Oct. 12 at Oregon.”

The Philadelphia Eagles have sent two representatives to Ohio State vs. Marshall on Saturday. The Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, New York Giants and Chicago Bears also have representatives at Ohio Stadium.
