Crew vs Inter Miami live MLS match updates

Two of the top teams in MLS, the Crew and Inter Miami, face off on Wednesday in their third meeting of the season at Lower.com Field.

If league-leading Miami beats the Crew, the club will win its first Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the MLS team with the best regular-season record. The Crew comes into the game in third place. A win or a draw could keep the Crew and second-place Los Angeles Galaxy in the race.

Columbus and Miami have split two games this year. Miami won 2-1 at home against Miami in a regular-season game on June 19. In August, Miami traveled to Columbus for a Leagues Cup round of 16 match. Despite Miami being ahead with 25 minutes remaining, the Crew staged a comeback thanks to sending home Diego Rossi’s two goals, giving Columbus a 3–2 win.

“It was a good football match, both teams played well,” said Rossi. “I think the most important thing we had in that game was that we were down, we were losing the game, and we still had our ideas, and we were trying to play our football. That was, I think I, the reason why we ended up winning the match, and I think that was for the best.”

The biggest difference tonight will be that Miami will play star player Lionel Messi. This will be the first time Columbus has faced him since joining the league in July 2023. Messi was out for the first two Crew matches due to international training or his right ankle injury.

Less than a minute into the second half, Crew forward Diego Rossi scored from the center of Inter Miami’s penalty area. Miami’s lead is reduced 2-1.

Lionel Messi gave Inter Miami a 2-0 lead with two goals in the first half. The statistics of the first half:

Five minutes after scoring his first goal against the Crew, Lionel Messi put his second on the board with a free kick at the top of Columbus’ penalty area. Inter Miami takes a 2-0 lead just before half time.

Miami was awarded a free kick after defender Rudy Camacho fouled forward Luis Suraz just outside Columbus’ penalty area. On the left side of the penalty area, Messi took the free kick and shot into the left corner of the goal.

In his first game at Lower.com Field, forward Lionel Messi scored the first goal to give Inter Miami a 1-0 against the Crew.

After keeping the ball away from two Columbus defenders in the Crew penalty area, Messi went one-on-one against goalkeeper Patrick Schulte. Messi gently sent his shot to Schulte’s right side and scored.

From outside Inter Miami’s penalty area, Crew forward Diego Rossi attempted a shot that goalkeeper Drake Callender had to dive to stop.

It was the first yellow card of the match as Inter Miami midfielder Federico Redondo was shown a yellow card for a foul on Crew midfielder Darlington Nagbe in midfield.

From the top left, in the Inter Miami penalty area, Crew forward Christian Ramirez launched a shot that would go far left of the goal and out of bounds.

Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets was called for a foul during a play on the Miami side, with Busquets colliding in the air with Crew midfielder Mo Farsi. Soon after the foul, fans at Lower.com Field expressed their disappointment that there was no red card on the line, especially after a replay was shown.

Farsi did need medical attention after the goal, but was able to stay in the match.

For the second time in the match, it looked like a player had scored, only to have the goal disallowed for offside. This time it was a Miami goal by defender Marcelo Weigandt that was disallowed after he was offside in Columbus’ penalty area.

Crew defender Rudy Camacho was able to knock the ball out of bounds on Inter Miami’s first scoring attempt of the match.

Striker Cucho Hernandez appeared to have given the team an early 1-0 lead against Inter Miami and even started celebrating the goal before the officials ruled that Hernandez was offside and set the goal aside.

The Crew were awarded the first corner kick of the match after Miami kicked the ball over the goal line. When Diego Rossi took the kick, the Crew couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity as Miami quickly cleared the ball out of the box with a header.

Both the Crew and Miami have several players unavailable tonight.
