Ryan Routh in custody after Trump golf club incident

The man being held in connection with what has been described as a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump has a long history of criminal and civil lawsuits, including a conviction for possession of a machine gun.

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested after shots were fired Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, three senior law enforcement sources said. He was convicted in 2002 of possessing a weapon of mass destruction, a machine gun, according to court records.

In that case there was a man named Ryan Routh, who was 36 years old at the time, is said to have led authorities on a vehicle chase before holed up at a roofing company in Greensboro, North Carolina, according to a report from the Greensboro News & Record.

A person named Ryan Routh lived in North Carolina for decades, property records show. Most recently, a Ryan Routh lived in the small coastal community of Kaaawa on the east coast of Oahu, Hawaii. Authorities there did not immediately respond to an inquiry about possible contacts with Routh.

After the 2002 arrest, authorities reportedly found the suspect in possession of a fully automatic machine gun, the Greensboro News & Record report said. The arrest coincides with North Carolina criminal records in which Routh was convicted of possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Documents also show convictions for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of stolen property and failing to hit and run. In those cases, which included convictions for misdemeanors such as resisting an officer and driving on a suspended license, the defendant was given suspended sentences and parole or probation.

There is no data on the time people spent in state prison in connection with these cases in the early 2000s.

Court records show more than 100 charges have been filed against Ryan Routh in North Carolina, most of them in Guilford County, which is under Greensboro. The exact outcome of each case was not immediately clear Sunday.

Court records for an individual named Ryan Routh also show that he was divorced in 2003 and that multiple civil judgments were entered after contractors and private citizens sued a roofing company he co-managed.

On Sunday, Palm Beach County District Attorney Dave Aronberg said on the MSNBC program “Ayman,” with Ayman Mohyeldin and Ali Velshi, that the federal government is taking over the prosecution in the West Palm Beach case and that the U.S. Department of Justice is expected to file any charges.

He argued that it is not necessary for a suspect to open fire for the case to be led by a charge of attempted murder.

Aronberg said he understood Routh was “lying in wait” for Trump before U.S. Secret Service agents spotted him. Routh was aiming at the agent who shot him, Aronberg said; the exact chronology of what happened is still unclear.

Routh was “pretty quiet” and “pretty cooperative” after a Martin County sheriff’s traffic unit took him into custody on Interstate 95, a county north of Palm Beach, Aronberg said.
