    Controversial no-call on potential late hit goes into OT loss against Nebraska

    There was controversy in the final moments of Illinois‘ 31-24 victory over Nebraska. Trailing 31-24 in overtime and third-and-42 from first down, Huskers QB Dylan Raiola completed a pass to the wide receiver Jahmal benches.

    After Banks had already been pushed out of bounds, Illinois linebacker Seth Coleman made contact with the Nebraska wideout again. However, no penalty was called on the play and Illinois tackled Raiola on the next play to secure the win.

    In the loss, Nebraska committed nine penalties, resulting in 89 total lost yards. By comparison, Illinois was given three penalties, and lost only 20 yards for its mistakes. If the officials had called a late hit on the play in overtime, Nebraska would have been awarded an automatic first down.

    Unfortunately, Nebraska’s fate wasn’t decided by one play. The Huskers’ defense couldn’t find any stops Friday night, allowing Illinois to rack up 381 yards. Illinois QB Lucas Altmyer was efficient in his work, completing 21 of his 27 pass attempts for 215 yards and four touchdowns, without throwing an interception.

    Nebraska’s offense did its best to combat Illinois’ offensive attack. The Cornhuskers racked up 361 total yards, highlighted by Dylan Raiola’s 284 passing yards and three touchdowns. Still, Nebraska couldn’t find the end zone when it mattered most: overtime.

    Nebraska was sacked on three of its last four plays. The Cornhuskers have now gone eight straight overtimes without scoring, dating back to a 2014 win over IowaNow Nebraska has a week to pull itself together before facing Purdue on September 28th.

    Nebraska DB Tommi Hill suffers injury against Illinois

    In Nebraska’s showdown against Illinois on Friday, Cornhuskers defensive back Tommi Hill left the game with an apparent head injury. After returning to the locker room for further examination, he was ruled out of the game and returned to the sideline in street clothes.

    It’s a huge loss for the Cornhuskers, who allowed the Fighting Illini to rack up 123 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone. Hill made two tackles before leaving the game with an injury.

    Tommi Hill has started every game for Nebraska this season and entered Friday’s game with 12 tackles and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown against ColoradoIt was Nebraska’s first pick-six since 2019.

    In the 2023 campaign, Hill appeared in all 12 games for the Huskers, recording 26 tackles, nine pass breakups and four interceptions. Fans will get more details on Hill’s condition throughout the week.
