Mets’ Francisco Alvarez leaves game with back cramps

An already difficult weekend for the Mets became even more difficult.

Francisco Alvarez left Friday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers with back spasms in the seventh inning, the Mets announced.

The injury occurred when Alvarez slid into third base before grabbing his backside and falling over. He appeared to be in a lot of pain and had to be helped off the field by a trainer. Luis Torrens replaced Alvarez behind the plate in the bottom half of the inning.

The 22-year-old catcher has been swinging a hot bat lately, going 5-for-his-last-18 with three home runs and seven RBI in his last seven games.

Alvarez was the center of attention earlier in Friday’s game when he began arguing heatedly over a bad strike three call with the home plate umpire for the manager. Carlos Mendoza intervened. Mendoza was ejected from the match.
