YouTube TV finally gets background viewing on Android and iOS

YouTube TV finally introduces a feature that is only available as a Premium feature on YouTube: background playback. It looks like the ability to listen in the background is being added to both Android and iOS YouTube TV apps.

Background play was one of the most loved features on YouTube. This allows users to lock their phone or tablet or exit the app and continue listening to the video they were watching. That feature has been stuck behind YouTube’s Premium subscription for a while, meaning free users can no longer enjoy the simple feature.

Considering that YouTube TV has always been a paid service, you’d think that background playback would have already made its way into the app.

According to multiple reports from users on Reddit, YouTube TV on Android and iOS has added the background play feature. In the current version of YouTube TV on Android and iOS, users should be able to leave the app or lock their devices and continue listening to the channel that was previously playing.

We’ve successfully tested this feature on Android, although the iOS devices we’ve tested haven’t yet been able to show background playback in practice. If reports about Apple’s devices are true, the feature should be rolled out soon.

According to comments in the posts, this feature has been slowly rolling out over the past week. More users are now starting to see that background play is available, and some still don’t see it. It seems like this is a gradual rollout that’s getting faster and faster, so it wouldn’t be surprising if it were available to everyone within a few weeks.

Has background play been rolled out for you in the YouTube TV app? Let us know in the comments!
