Liz Cheney says she’s voting for Kamala Harris

Washington — Former Rep. Liz Cheney, a Republican who has been a staunch critic of former President Donald Trump, said she will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

“I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing down candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” Cheney, who represented Wyoming, said Wednesday at Duke University. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I’ve thought deeply about this. And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only will I not vote for Donald Trump, I will vote for Kamala Harris.” Duke University made the video available.

Cheney, who served in the congressional committee investigating the Capitol riotssaid in January that Trump should be disqualified from the vote because of his actions related to the January 6, 2021, attack.

At the time, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled, in a divided verdicthad said that Trump was disqualified from serving as president because of his actions related to the Capitol riots and therefore could not appear on the state ballot. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in March that states can’t delete the former president of the polls for his role in the riots.

“We have to be prepared to defeat him at the polls, and I believe we ultimately will,” Cheney said. told “Face the Nation” in January.

Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris-Walz’s 2024 campaign manager, said in a statement that Harris was “proud to have earned Congressman Cheney’s vote.”

“For every American who wants to reject the chaos and division of Donald Trump, turn the page, and chart a new path forward that protects our freedoms and defends the American values we all believe in, there is a place for you in the Harris-Walz coalition and we will continue to work to earn your support,” Dillon said.

When asked for comment by The Associated Press, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung replied: “Who is Liz Cheney and what does she do?”

Cheney is the latest in a long line of Republicans who have recently voiced their support for Harris.

More than 200 Republicans who worked for former President George HW Bush, former President George W. Bush, Senator John McCain and Senator Mitt Romney endorsed Harris in a letter saying democracy would be “irreparably imperiled” by a new Trump administration. They urged moderate Republicans and independents in the swing states that helped elect President Biden “to take a bold stand again.”

Their announcement followed speeches by several Republicans at last month’s Democratic National Convention in which they lambasted Trump’s leadership and personality. Olivia Troye, who served as an adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence, Stephanie Grisham — one of Trump’s press officers and a key adviser to Melania Trump — and former Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois were among the Republicans who spoke out against the GOP presidential nominee.
