YFN Lucci’s lawyer says jailed rapper alive after death hoax

YFN Lucci is still alive, despite online rumors that the 33-year-old rapper was murdered in prison.

In January, Lucci pleaded guilty to a gang-related charge after striking a deal with prosecutors nearly three years after he was indicted in Atlanta on murder, gang association and racketeering charges. He received a 10-year prison sentence.

On Wednesday (September 18), rumors circulated on social media that Lucci, whose real name is Rayshawn Bennett, had passed away.

However, TMZ reports that Lucci’s attorney Drew Findling, who represented him during the January trial, has confirmed that his client is alive and well.

There is speculation that the recent rumors surrounding Lucci’s death are intended to play on intense emotions following the death of his former labelmate Rich Homie Quan earlier this month.

Quan, born Dequantes Lamar, was found dead in his home at the age of 34. No cause of death has been released.

Lucci was one of dozens of people charged in April 2021 in a sweeping indictment against alleged members of the Bloods gang.

He was initially charged with murder in January 2021 after police said he was the driver in a drive-by shooting that left a man dead.

As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped 12 of the 13 charges against Bennett and he pleaded guilty to one count of violating the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, his attorneys said.

“After three years of pretrial investigation, over two weeks of jury selection, and three years of incarceration awaiting his jury trial, today the District Attorney’s Office finally relented and dismissed the murder and RICO charges against Rayshawn Bennett,” defense attorneys Drew Findling, Gabe Banks and Marissa Goldberg said at the time. “As he has maintained for three years, Mr. Bennett will NOT cooperate with any other case.”

Lucci accepted a plea deal and pleaded guilty on January 23, 2024. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 10 years probation. His prison sentence was credited as time served.

In July, the Fulton County district attorney filed a letter with the state Board of Pardons and Paroles supporting his early release, which could take place as early as January 2025.

“The Fulton County District Attorney did something unorthodox,” Findling told WSB-TV in Atlanta. “That letter from the district attorney is a powerful punch and really is the heart of the letter and the supporting documents and the memorandum that we shared with the parole board.”
