Jasson Domínguez’s expected playing time was a key factor in the New York Yankees’ decision not to call up the young outfielder, as teams are now allowed to expand their rosters.

“When he comes here, you want him to play every day,” Boone told reporters on Sunday. “So he’s going to continue to be in that conversation. I feel like he’s been playing well the last couple of weeks, coming back from the oblique injury. Tough call right now, but that doesn’t mean that won’t change, that won’t change in a couple of days, a week, two weeks — whatever it is. But it’s important that he continues to play now.”

Domínguez has long been considered not only one of the Yankees’ top prospects, but also one of the top prospects in the minors. He made his MLB debut last year and looked good in his 33 plate appearances.

The 21-year-old has thrived at Triple-A in 2024 after recovering from midseason Tommy John surgery and an oblique injury. In 37 games, he has five home runs, 18 RBI, 14 stolen bases and a .306/.359/.469 slash line.

Besides the obvious promise, his speed and versatility — he’s played all three outfield positions for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders — could make him a solid postseason option. Boone could bring him off the bench at a key time as a pinch runner or defensive substitute.

That’s why Yankees fans were stunned when the team announced four new players to the active roster and Domínguez was not one of them.

The frustration is compounded by the fact that New York’s everyday left fielder Alex Verdugo is currently no better than Domínguez and may be even worse.

Since early May, Verdugo is hitting .338 with seven homers in 101 games. Whatever value the 28-year-old brings to the defense is offset by his futility at the plate.

Verdugo’s impending free agency means the Yankees don’t have a long-term commitment to him either. It makes more sense to hitch your wagon to a young star who has many years of team control.

Boone still has time to get Domínguez on the roster in time for the playoffs. If that happens, the only question is why the move didn’t come sooner, because an extra week or two in the minors probably won’t have a noticeable impact on his development.
