🚨 Headlines

🎓 Pac-12 Expansion: Utah State is joining the Pac-12 and UNLV could be next, sources tell Yahoo Sports. The conference is also eyeing Gonzaga.

⚾️ Goodbye, Oakland: Athletics owner John Fisher sent a farewell letter to fans ahead of the team’s final series in Oakland this week, saying “we did everything we could” to keep the team in town. (Fact check: No, they didn’t.)

🏈 Underdog at home: No. 4 Alabama is currently a 1.5-point underdog entering Saturday’s home game against No. 2 Georgia. If that holds, it will be the first time the Tide are no longer favorites in Tuscaloosa since 2007, a streak of 90 straight games.

⚽️ Brutal blow: Manchester City midfielder Rodri is likely to miss the rest of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal, ESPN reports.

🏈 Bush Files NIL Lawsuit: Reggie Bush, who regained his 2005 Heisman Trophy in April, is now suing the NCAA, USC and the Pac-12 over the past use of his name, image and likeness.

The Commanders’ 38-33 victory over the Bengals Monday night was historic: for the first time since 1940, an NFL game saw zero punts and zero fouls.

Star of the night: Jayden Daniels was nearly perfect through the air (21/23, 254 yards, 2 TD), giving him the highest pass completion percentage for a rookie QB in NFL history. He also added 39 yards and a touchdown with his legs. Not bad for just his third career game.

  • Fellow LSU Heisman winner Joe Burrow was spectacular in defeat (29/38, 324 yards, 3 TDs), becoming just the second QB to throw for 300 yards and 3 TDs this season.

  • But alas, the Bengals are 0-3, which is something of a death sentence in this league. Since 1979, only six NFL teams have made the playoffs after losing their first three games.

What you shouldn’t miss: Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, threw a beautiful 27-yard TD pass to Terry McLaurin to put the Bengals away. The throw had a 10.3% completion rate, according to Next Gen Stats, making it the most improbable TD of the season.

It would be hard to put the ball in a better spot if you were standing two feet away from it…

Red Hot Attack: The Commanders are the first team in the Super Bowl era to go two straight games without throwing the ball away or giving it away. They have scored on 13 consecutive drives (excluding kneels), with eight field goals and five TDs.

Not a bad performance… Commanders punter Tress Way, who hasn’t punted since Week 1, will make $3.4 million this season, or $200,000 per game. So he’s earned nearly half a million dollars over the past two weeks just for holding the kicker.

Orchard Park, New York — Are the Bills the best team in football? It’s hard to argue otherwise after their dominant 47-10 win over the Jaguars. They are now 3-0 with the NFL’s top-scoring offense (37.3 ppg) and seventh-best scoring defense (16.0 ppg).

Robinhood put its logo on the Wizards uniforms last season. Now, the financial services company has partnered with two more teams: the Heat (announced this morning) and the Grizzlies (announced last week).

Zoom out: Jersey patches are a relatively new phenomenon in major sports in North America, and Robinhood is upping the ante by investing in multiple teams in a single league. For the Heat, let’s hope this goes better than their last partnership with a trading platform (RIP, FTX Arena)…

🏊‍♂️ This man just swam 87 miles… non-stop

With all due respect to Jayden Daniels, The Athlete of the Week award goes to Neil Agius, who just broke a world record of 140 kilometers (~87 miles) non-stop around the islands of Malta. I can’t believe it…

via The Times of Malta:

A large crowd erupted in prolonged applause as the 38-year-old emerged from the water after 52 hours, walked to a chair and waved to people wishing him luck after beating his own world record distance of 125.7km set in 2021.

“It wasn’t a swim for me, it was a swim for Malta,” Agius said in a brief commentary, looking remarkably well after three days and three nights in the water. … His swim now has to be ratified by the World Open Water Swimming Association.

Man with a mission: Agius used the swim to raise awareness of Malta’s marine habitat and to coordinate clean-up operations along the coast of the small Mediterranean country, which resulted in thousands of kilos of waste being removed.

Today 104 years ago, Babe Ruth became the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs in a single season, hitting the 50th and 51st home runs in a double play against the Washington Senators.

Announcing his shot: No, this wasn’t his iconic called shot, but Babe – in his first season with the Yankees – did publicly announce that he had set his sights on 50 home runs.

  • A year earlier, his last with the Red Sox, he had hit 29 runs, breaking the previous record of 27 that had stood for more than three decades.

  • After breaking that record in July 1920, he said his goal was to live “half a century.” Experts called him “an idiot in the attic.” Two months later, the “Sultan of Swat” swallowed their words.

A man among boys: Ruth finished the season with 54 home runs, which 35 more than second place (George Sisler, 19) and more than second, third and fourth places combined (51).

The 50-HR club: 32 players have surpassed the 50 home run mark in a single season, including 10 who have done so at least twice.

  • 4x: Ruth, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa

  • 3x: Aaron Rechter, Alex Rodriguez

  • 2x: Jimmie Foxx, Ken Griffey Jr., Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Ralph Kiner

Meanwhile, in Illinois… On that same day, the 1919 White Sox plot to end the World Series was made public for the first time after testimony was presented before a grand jury in Cook County, Illinois.
