Liverpool’s first-year coach Arne Slot will face his first major test when he and his team visit Manchester United, home to fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag.

Liverpool (2-0-0, 6 points) recorded comfortable 2-0 wins away at recently promoted Ipswich Town and at home to Brentford in their opening league games under Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

United’s summer so far has seen far more departures than arrivals, with Ten Hag’s side finishing fourth in his second season in charge having finished a disappointing eighth in the previous campaign. And after a season-opening 1-0 home win over Fulham, Man U (1-1-0, 3 points) were deservedly beaten 2-1 at Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend.

But Ten Hag has a solid record against Liverpool, including four points from six last season, with the most recent result, a 2-2 home draw, helping to derail the Merseysiders’ title bid.

Liverpool have completed a move for Italian forward Federico Chiesa in time for Sunday’s clash, although Slot said his debut is more likely after the September international break. That shouldn’t be a major problem for the Reds given Mo Salah is already in form with two league goals.

Ten Hag will still have to do without the injured Rasmus Hojlund, Man U’s top scorer in the league last season, who suffered a hamstring injury during the pre-season.
