Woman’s ‘Never Before Seen’ Moment at Local Dog Park Stuns: ‘Magical’

A woman walking her dog described the “magical moment” she experienced in her local park this week, saying it was “amazing” to see “the end of a rainbow” before her eyes.

Jazz Thornton, a New Zealand author and activist, told Yahoo News Australia that it took her a moment to realize what she was seeing when she stood in the rain in Auckland Park this week. But she was saddened to learn that “there was no gold,” as the folk tale goes.

“I’ve only seen rainbows go behind things, so seeing the end was crazy,” she said. “As we got closer, it didn’t move either, usually they go further away.”

The 29-year-old shared an incredible photo with Yahoo showing the rainbow touching the grass and the colorful rays of sunlight shooting through the atmospheric sky.

It is often thought that the end of a rainbow will never be seen because it does not exist, since the rainbow itself is just an illusion. But here, “the end is pretty clear and on the ground,” quantum physics professor Andrew Greentree told Yahoo.

“Rainbows are actually always round, but we usually don’t see the bottom of the rainbow. That’s why there is always an ‘end’ to the rainbow somewhere.”

“Rainbows are formed by light reflecting off water droplets in the air. At the same time, the light is reflected, but also bent – like millions of tiny glasses,” Greentree explains.

“The incredible thing about water is that each color of light is bent differently from the others, and so the reflected light is separated into colors. This video shows a very bright rainbow, as well as a second rainbow (double rainbow), and a dark band between the arcs.”

He explained that the bending of light is usually quite small, which is why we usually only see rainbows when the water is far away. “But there are always rainbows, provided the sun, the viewer and the water are in the right positions,” he said.

“Here the water in which the rainbow is reflected is quite close – closer than the trees and the background. That’s why the arc is relatively small.”

Thornton captured the amazing moment on camera before sharing it on social media. The incredible sight shocked many who called it “cool” and “beautiful” and several admitted they never saw the ending either.

“Never in my 50 years of life have I seen the end of a rainbow. That’s so cool,” one person commented on the video. “Beautiful, I’ve never seen the end of a rainbow,” said another.

“I’ve never seen one in my 31 years,” added a third. “Thanks for this. I can cross that off my bucket list.”

Even Greentree was amazed by the unique discovery, calling it a “beautiful rainbow.” “There may not be a pot of gold at the end of this (video), but there is certainly a beauty that will last longer.”
