What the Giants said – Week 5 of 2024: Seahawks vs. Giants

BRIAN DABOLL: So good to go out here and get a win. A lot of the bounce was evident the way it started: a 100-yard return after we hit the ball on them. I thought we played good and efficient football. I thought the quarterback played well again. That starts. The running game was good. Pass game was efficient. Make some big plays. And then defensive and special teams, you know, grinding back and forth. They have a lot of talent on their football team. Good attacking football team. They did a good job defensively picking off passes. But I’m proud of the guys who come out here, play a good game and get a win along the way. You know, I think it was Tuesday (special teams coordinator Mike Ghobrial) Ghobi brought that play to me. You know, he talked about who he thought would be a good candidate to take the plunge. Isaiah (Simmons) came to mind. He executed perfectly. Proud of our team, our coaches. They put a lot of effort into getting here on the road. It started off the same way, not the same, but similar to Cleveland week when we got back. So proud of the boys. Well competed. Achieved the result we wanted. Actually, I’m proud of the process, how they stayed true to it, how they practiced, how they prepared, meetings, all that stuff. Good win.

What makes you think: What did you see that made you think that piece would work here?

BRIAN DABOLL: Well, you have a lot of confidence in your assistants. (Special teams coordinator Mike Ghobrial) Ghobi showed me a few clips. And we kept it up too. I kept asking for it throughout the game. I thought we probably had a chance and Ghobi said, I just want to set it up, one more, one more. There is a risk reward, because if you get a fine, you will be the first to pay for the violation. I thought Ghobi set up the rush well. I called it at the perfect time. Then, you know, Isaiah (Simmons) is there before the play to practice getting out and what he does, so he was prepared to go. We had Dexter (Lawrence II) there. Well performed play. Critical situation.

Brian, have you noticed that the (invisible) usually always goes very low when you block like this?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, I’m not going to get into the strategy. As technical staff we have worked hard on it every week. That’s our job, to try to put the players in the best position possible, and ultimately on Sundays their job is to go out and perform and execute and work with the coaches and give and take things. Good team win.

Isaiah Simmons, he’s usually there…

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, it was just a good game plan from (special teams coordinator Mike Ghobrial) Ghobi and the special teams guys. You know, I asked for it a little bit earlier and gained a lot of confidence in our coaching staff. It’s a very cohesive unit, special teams, defense, offense. A bunch of good people to work with.

How challenging was it as a playcaller, your starting running back is not there so you have a rookie. It is clear that Malik Nabers is not there. Do you change things up and maybe use some guys in those situations, or do you have to trust rookies?

BRIAN DABOLL: I mean, that’s a coach’s job. That’s what you work for during the week. We moved (Darius) Slayton to where (Malik) Nabers was a couple, and he was on the other side most of the time, so now he has to learn the whole thing – not learn because he’s been with us since we got here, and one of the reasons is that he is very reliable and smart. So when you hear a personnel group for training camp and things like that, you go to this position and suddenly you have to turn around and go to that position, but that’s Slay. He is a great teammate and he has always done what we asked of him. I’ve said that countless times. I’m happy for him. What was his production? I know it was probably quite something. You know, it was good to see the rookies. They are still in development. It’s October now, so you’re trying to think of some things to work on in September. And one game actually has nothing to do with the other. We will do it all again against a very challenging opponent, a powerful team coming here in a week.

Dabs, how did this moment play out specifically for Isaiah Simmons, a guy who hasn’t dressed in a few weeks and is doing what he’s doing today?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, I think he dresses every week if I’m not mistaken. That’s what I said. I gave him a game ball. You know, look, he’s a high pick in the first round. He has been on a number of different teams. There are certain roles he plays, and not everyone is a starter for you. I mean, the people who play behind them or the roles, the specific roles that we have, they have to do their job at a high level, whatever that role is. That’s what good teammates do. You know, certainly everyone wants to play the ball on offense or 100% of the time. This is a team game, so you can only bet 11. When your number is called, we expect you to participate. I am therefore proud of the young man. At the end of the game he made a great play to seal it. I give (special teams coordinator Mike Ghobrial) Ghobi a lot of credit. First-year coordinator. I thought of it, brought it up. You know, it was a good team win.

What impressed you about Tyrone Tracy, his running?

BRIAN DABOLL: I got a lot of yards. He was productive. He was tough. I mean, I don’t know if he needs to eat more on the sidelines, whatever it is. Give him the ball. You know, he ran fast. He saw the holes. He pressed the hole. Something we’ve been working hard on is pressing the hole and setting up your blocks. Made some extra meters with the ball in his hand. I don’t know, he had a few meters too, right? What was it?

BRIAN DABOLL: He had to have a high average.

He wanted to be fed on the sidelines?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah. They all do that. There are also certain plays that we left out. So there is a lot of tidying up to be done. But I am proud of our team. I’m proud of our coaches who go all over the country and lost some tough games here in the last month that I thought we were in. I think we’re getting better and better. Certainly not, but I think the cohesion of the staff and the players is important, especially at the beginning of the year. Lots of hard workers. Many team players put the team first. But a long way to go. It’s one game in a tough environment. What I’m proud of is how they responded early in the game when the big play happened. It was very similar to Cleveland. Let me say this. Someone asked about the fans. Our fans were great again. We are in Washington and traveling. I mean, it’s fun to hear the New York Giants sing at the end of the game. You know, so shoutout to the fans.

Dabs, how fun is it to coach Daniel Jones when he’s playing at the level he is?

BRIAN DABOLL: It was always fun coaching him because he’s a true professional. Again, always want the results, but have a lot of confidence in him, how he plays, how he prepares. You know, you feel comfortable putting the ball in his hands. That’s what we did early in the game. We went after them and threw the ball a little bit. So have a lot of confidence in him.

When he runs and lowers his shoulder to the defenders, does that kind of bleed in a good way?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, yeah. Every time a quarterback does that. You have to be smart about it. But he is a real competitor. There was a play a few weeks ago where he was on the go line in Cleveland. He’s a competitive young man who, again, Daniel Jones, has done everything I and we have asked him to do. He’s here early. He stays late. He has good leadership qualities. It’s never been easy for him, but whatever we ask him to do, he does it to the best of his ability. He has played good football here. We need him to keep doing that.

What about Slay… (indistinguishable.) Then he comes right back and has a big touchdown catch?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, I haven’t seen the play. Certainly something we have shown here in recent weeks. I’m not sure he actually did what I think he did; he was very sorry and remorseful for doing it. We’ve talked about it a lot. And then we go ahead and look, in that game he made, he wasn’t even the main character. Wan’Dale (Robinson) was. They played a bit of a double move and that was the secondary read. Incredible play from DJ (Daniel Jones) to see it and great route from 86 on that big one. I don’t know how many yards it was, Jordan?

(About how that O-line group came together.)

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, I said this, it’s a veterans group. Well coached by Carmen (Bricillo) and James (Ferentz). There’s good chemistry in that room. Lots of extra meetings, not only with the line, but they stay late on Wednesdays and Thursdays and get all kinds of food. The running backs stay in there. You know, it’s good food too. It’s just a close-knit group. That’s what you need to be offensive. They are veterans who have played a lot of football. Again, this is our second win. Of course we would like to have more. But we don’t do that. So get back to work this week and give it our best shot.

How much do you think it helped Tyrone Tracy that he got into a rhythm, good and (indiscernible). Do you think this might be more important for a young running back, to be more involved instead of waiting for his opportunities?

BRIAN DABOLL: Yeah, I would probably say there’s some truth to that. I think for any running back, the more carries you get, the more froth you get. The carries must be productive carries. You know, you go out there and you hand it off and you gain a yard and zero, you know, one of the things where we’re one of the most productive times in the first four weeks of football, caught ourselves on the first production, and less while running. I don’t know what the numbers are today, but something we’ll continue to look at to give ourselves a good shot at second down or even skip some of those if we run out of 18 third downs. I don’t know how many we had today. But I definitely think for any player, when you get into a rhythm, it’s like a streaky basketball shooter. The more you shoot, the more you will earn.

Did you even consider the quarterback sneaking up on the play that Eric Gray fumbled? Such a short distance there.

BRIAN DABOLL: Well, I’m not going to get into strategy. It was a few things there. But they played well on the edge. We can get it in. Again, what I’m most proud of is how we got back here.

Malik Nabers is texting you at all?

BRIAN DABOLL: I don’t know. I’ll see it here. I have now received 141 text messages. I’m going to get started.
