    Now that the calendar has turned to October, much of college football is shifting to conference play.

    However, there are still a handful of non-conference games remaining, including one that looks much more attractive than it did two months ago.

    On Friday, Syracuse will make the approximately 2,500-mile trek to Las Vegas to take on No. 23 UNLV at Allegiant Stadium in a matchup that pits one of the ACC’s early surprise teams against one of its most exciting and unexpectedly newsworthy teams from across the university. football.

    Under first-year head coach Fran Brown, the Dutch are 3-1, a stretch highlighted by a win on September 7 against then-Georgia Tech. Syracuse’s strong start was aided by Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord, who threw for 1,459 yards, 14 touchdowns and five interceptions. One of his favorite targets was Trebor Pena, a junior wide receiver who ranks eighth among all FBS players with five touchdown receptions.

    At UNLV, the Dutch will face what could be one of the biggest challenges of the season. The Rebels are 4-0 in the rankings for the first time in program history. Coach Barry Odom’s team not only won, but did so with undeniable flair, averaging 45.3 points per game, the 10th-best mark among 134 FBS programs.

    The program became a source of national intrigue and debate last week when quarterback Matthew Sluka left the team over allegedly unfulfilled verbal promises on NIL payments. However, in their first game without Sluka, the Rebels didn’t miss a beat, racking up 450 total yards in a 59-14 win against Fresno State. In the win, quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams, Sluka’s former backup, accounted for 301 yards and four touchdowns.
