He was also a capable medium-pace bowler, taking 396 wickets at an average of 32.55 during his 304-match first-class career.

Stephenson, who recently served as CEO of Essex for three years, moves to WA Cricket following the departure of Matthews in March.

Matthews served in this role for 12 years.

Stephenson, who spent 17 years at Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Lord’s Cricket Ground holding various roles, will take up his new role at WA Cricket ahead of the upcoming season.

In the meantime, WA Cricket Chief Operating Officer Justin Michael will continue in the role of interim CEO.

One of Stephenson’s first major tasks will be to oversee the ongoing redevelopment of the WACA ground.

“I am extremely pleased and excited to be joining WA Cricket at such an important time for the organisation, with the redevelopment and success of the men’s and women’s teams. It’s a great moment to be joining,” Stephenson said in a statement.

“For me, leadership is about creating a truly positive impact.

“Community involvement and the growth of the sport in the state is a big focus. Continuing the success on the field, which means developing more Australian players, and connecting communities with cricket is really important to me.

“I have visited the WACA ground a few times and have wonderful memories of it.

“I used to watch Test matches at the WACA on TV as a kid. It’s such an iconic stadium and it’s exciting to be part of this next phase.”
