Von Miller seems to be back in full force

Von Miller didn’t have a single sack last season after returning from a torn ACL he suffered on Thanksgiving Day in 2022. But two games into his third season with the Buffalo Bills and his 14th in the NFL, he appears to be back to his old form.

A third quarter sack by Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson during a Thursday Evening Football The game gave Von Miller his second sack in five days, bringing his career total to 125.5 and continuing his ascent on the NFL’s all-time sack list.

Miller is primarily a pass-rush specialist now. After starting 11 games in 2022 — his first season with the Bills — he didn’t start at all last year in his return to the lineup after his torn ACL. He also didn’t record a sack in 12 regular-season games and two postseason games last season, finishing with just three quarterback hits in what was — by far — his worst NFL campaign. That included a game against the Denver Broncos in which he was a nonfactor.

But it often takes a player a year to get back to normal after an ACL injury. And the structure of the contract Von Miller signed with Buffalo in 2022 gave him time; the team couldn’t cut him without further worsening their dire salary cap situation.

So Miller had time to work his way back.

During the fourth quarter on Thursday, the Amazon Prime broadcast announced that Miller was pressured 4 times on Thursday night with an average time to quarterback of 2.10 seconds — his best mark since 2021, which was his final Broncos season before he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams midway through the campaign.

By the numbers and the eye test, Von Miller appears to be back to his vintage self. And that could give the Bills a shot at achieving the goal that eluded them during the Josh Allen era: returning to the Super Bowl.
