US Open: No. 1 Jannik Sinner holds off Tommy Paul to reach last Grand Slam quarterfinals

Although Tommy Paul supported him early in the match, he was unable to pass the world’s top-ranked tennis player on Monday evening.

Jannik Sinner fought off a battle with Paul at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York and reached the quarterfinals of the US Open on Monday. Sinner won 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in straight sets in a thrilling battle at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. That knocked Paul out of the US Open and ended his second consecutive run to the fourth round of the tournament.

Sinner won the Australian Open to start the year, and he reached the semifinals at the French Open and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. He now becomes only the fifth player to reach all four major quarterfinals in a single season at age 23 or younger in the Open era. Monday night’s victory was also his 20th at a Grand Slam in 2024, the most among both men and women this season.

Paul immediately jumped to his feet and stunned Sinner. He took a 4-1 lead and scored 11 straight points early in the first set. Sinner wasn’t out for long, however. He rattled off 10 of the next 12 to quickly level the set at 4-4. He took it to 5-4 and nearly sealed the set there, but Paul saved the set point and eventually forced the tiebreak. Sinner eventually defeated him to claim the first set and complete his rally.

The two remained in lockstep in the second set, which ended in a tiebreak after a late surge from Sinner. He then defeated Paul again in the tiebreak to take the win by one point.

Finally, after two close sets, Sinner pulled away. The Italian jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third set and ended the night quickly with a 6-1 third set victory to take his straight sets win.

Sinner is the favorite to win the US Open after both Carlos Alcaraz and Djokovic were eliminated early. He will face No. 5 Daniil Medvedev, whom he defeated in the Australian Open final, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday in what will undoubtedly be his toughest match of the tournament so far. The two have split their two matches this season, with Medvedev beating Sinner in five sets at Wimbledon. Medvedev reached the quarterfinals after beating Portuguese Nuno Borges in straight sets earlier on Monday.

Sixth-seeded Jessica Pegula reached the quarterfinals for the second time in three years with a straight-sets victory over Diana Shnaider, 6-4, 6-2. Shnaider came back in the first set, but Pegula – with the crowd cheering her on – was able to finish her off.

Pegula has now reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament seven times. She joins compatriot Emma Navarro, who defeated Coco Gauff on Sunday. However, Pegula has never reached a semifinal in her previous six attempts. At the 2022 US Open, she lost to Iga Swiatek, whom she will now face again after the world No. 1 beat Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 6-1 in her match on Monday night.

Pegula, however, believes she is playing her best tennis of the year. After second-round losses at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open seems to confirm that.
