US honors workers with Labor Day holiday

The United States celebrates its annual Labor Day on Monday, an official recognition of the country’s workers and an unofficial end to summer.

The holiday marks the end of a three-day weekend that many use as a final vacation, allowing children to enjoy the start of the new school year. Stores also often hold special sales.

The Transportation Security Administration said it expected to screen 17 million people at the nation’s airports, an 8% increase over the number of Labor Day travelers last year. People traveling by car during the holiday season will experience average gas prices that are more than 10% lower than the same period last year.

On Monday, cities and towns across the country will hold parades to celebrate the official holiday. The holiday traces its origins to an 1882 parade in New York City that drew 10,000 workers.

The national holiday was not established until 1894, when President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating Labor Day as the first Monday in September.
