ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Minn. — Seven people, including a 14-year-old girl, were injured and one man died after an explosion at a campfire on Friday night.

Emergency responders were called to the 12000 block of Jaranson Road in French Township, north of Hibbing, just before 8:30 p.m.

Upon arrival, law enforcement learned that a group of family and friends had gathered to enjoy the holiday weekend. While the group was preparing the campfire, an unknown flammable liquid was used to ignite the fire, causing the flames to explode.

Authorities said the 14-year-old suffered severe burns and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in the Twin Cities.

Seven others, ranging in age from their late 20s to late 50s, were also injured. Their conditions are unknown.

A 53-year-old man from Hibbing, who was also present at the meeting, died of his injuries.

The incident is being investigated by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
