Can you solve today’s sentence?

This one really surprised me, even though I guessed the ‘O’ right away. FLOAT left me with a whopping 270 remaining possible solutions, and SPINE only reduced that number to 37. Ouch. GOURD felt like a logical next guess – I had to exclude the ‘U’ after all – but apparently there were still five words left. I could only think of two: HOBBY and MOM and I chose the wrong one. Apparently others like COCKY were options, so I think I got lucky even in five. Huzza?

Contemporary Wordle Etymology

The word ‘mama’ is a diminutive of ‘mother’, which itself is a variant of ‘mother’. The root “mother” comes from the Old English word modorwhich is derived from Proto-Germanic mother and Proto-Indo-European morewhich means ‘mother’. “Mommy” became common in the 19th century as a childish or affectionate way of referring to the mother, similar to how “daddy” is used for “father.” It reflects the tendency in many languages to use doublings or diminutives when addressing parents in an endearing manner.
