I had completely forgotten that yesterday was the first full day of fall. The equinox was actually Sunday morning, so Sunday still had that last bit of summer. Now we’re moving full force into fall. Pumpkin spice lattes are taking over the cafes. Halloween decorations are going up. There’s a house not far from mine that has like ten of those giant inflatable dragons in their little yard. It’s a little… weird. Obsessive, maybe. But hey, do what you want. That’s what I say.

I chose DELAY today because I had been on the phone a few minutes earlier and my voice on the other end was delayed by a few seconds. It came through clearly, but after an annoying wait. This made the conversation a bit more difficult, but we got the job done. From there I chose PARCH because it contained many of the letters in the various words I had come up with for the Wordle. It was a, dare I say, HANDY word, which left me with only one possible solution. Hooray!

I get 1 point for guessing in three and another for beating that disgusting, cowardly Wordle Bot. 2 points! Another hurrah!

How to Play Wordle Competitively

Guess a number 1 and you get 3 points; guess a number 2 and you get 2 points; guess a number 3 and you get 1 point; guess a number 4 and you get 0 points; guess a number 5 and you get -1 point; guess a number 6 and you get -2 points and missing the Wordle gives -3 points.
If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you draw you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily score or just play every day for a new score.
Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points, positive or negative.
You can keep a running count or just play day-to-day. Have fun!

The Etymology of Today’s Wordle

Handy originally comes from Old English dog (hand) with the suffix -jmeaning “at hand” or “useful.” In the 16th century it was used to describe someone who was handy or skilled.
