The Menéndez family is speaking out against Ryan Murphy and Netflix.

Tammi Menendez, Erik Menéndez’s wife, shared a statement on social media attributed to “pretty much the entire extended family” of Erik and Lyle Menéndez disapproving of Murphy’s Netflix series “Monsters.”

The group of family members, which according to the statement consists of 24 people, criticized the show as a “phobic, gross, anachronistic, serial episodic nightmare that is not only full of falsehoods and outright falsehoods, but also ignores the latest exculpatory revelations.”

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Netflix and Murphy for comment.

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” centers on the Menéndez brothers, who were convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents. The brothers argued that they acted in self-defense after years of abuse by their father, José Menéndez.

In an earlier statement, Erik Menéndez blasted the Netflix show for its “caricature of Lyle, rooted in terrible and blatant lies” and its “dishonest portrayal” of their story.

The extended family said in their own statement that they were “victims” of the “grotesque shockadrama” and that Murphy “never spoke to us” before creating the show.

“The character assassination of Erik and Lyle, our cousins, under the guise of ‘storytelling’ is abhorrent,” they said.

“We know these men. We have grown up with them since they were boys. We love them and are close to them to this day. We also know what happened in their home and the unimaginably turbulent lives they led. we were eyewitnesses to many atrocities that you would never have to witness.

“It is sad that Ryan Murphy, Netflix and everyone else involved in this series do not understand the impact of years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Maybe ‘Monsters’ is all about Ryan Murphy, after all.”

One of the most controversial elements of the series is the suggestion that Erik and Lyle Menéndez may have had an incestuous relationship. In one episode they kiss on the lips, while in another their mother shows them showering together. The final scene is presented as a theory from journalist Dominick Dunne, played by Nathan Lane, who hypothesizes that the brothers may have killed their parents to cover up their relationship.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Murphy defended the show, saying his intention was to provide multiple perspectives on what happened.

“What the show does is present the views and theories of so many people who were involved in the case,” Murphy said. “Dominick Dunne wrote several articles on that theory. We present his point of view, just as we present the point of view of (Menéndez’s attorney) Leslie Abramson. We had an obligation to show all that, and we did that.”

In their statement, the family described Dunne, who died in 2009, as a “pro-prosecution hack.”

Murphy also told ET that it’s “interesting” that Erik Menéndez made a statement “without having seen the show,” adding, “I would say 60-65% of our show, in the scripts and in the film form, revolves around the abuse and what they claim happened to them, and we do it very carefully and we give them their day in court.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who played Lyle Menéndez, also responded to Erik Menéndez’s earlier statement, telling USA TODAY that he has “sympathy and empathy” for him “in the sense that I can only imagine how difficult it is to most traumatic moment of your life captured right there on the screen for everyone to see.”
