The last time Las Vegas saw 100 degree heat for so long

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – 2024 was a year of record-breaking heat, and with each year it seems like new records are broken every summer. But how far back does this data go?

This week, much of Southern Nevada is again under an excessive heat warning, despite it being well into fall. According to weather data, the last time the heat lasted this long was in 1947.

That year the valley experienced 100 days of heat of 100 degrees or more! Last Friday the valley experienced its 103rd day.

FIRST ALERT AGAIN: Forecast Outlook – 09/30/24

That means 2024 is the new record holder for the highest number of triple-digit days in a year. Triple digits are not typical for this time of year as the average high temperature for late September is around 89-90 degrees.

But after the hottest summer on record, valley residents can be thankful they won’t be battling the hottest high temperature on record this week. That honor was broken in July when the valley saw 120-degree heat for the first time in history.

In 1947, the 100-degree heat lingered until October 4. This week, these high temperatures are expected to remain strong through the weekend, ranging from 101 to 108 degrees.

For those seeking relief from the heat, cooling stations have reopened across the valley as the heat continues.
