“The Goonies” is finally getting a sequel.

According to a new report from the Sun, a sequel to the 1985 cult classic about a group of adventurous kids is in the works.

According to the news agency, the cast members of the original film are expected to return for the sequel.

Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton starred in the film.

Several cast members have died, including John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Mary Ellen Trainor, Keith Walker and Lupe Ontiveros.

According to The Sun, filming for the sequel is scheduled to begin next year, with a possible release date in 2026 or 2027.

“The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but it’s finally happening,” a source told The Sun.

“The team is excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to new audiences,” they added.

The insider also said that since “the teen adventure market is on fire,” producers want the sequel to have a plot that will be well-received by both loyal fans and new viewers.

“The Goonies” was directed by Richard Donner, who died in 2021 at the age of 91.

Steven Spielberg conceived the story for the classic family film, which follows the tale of a group of kids from near Astoria, Oregon, who embark on a dangerous adventure.

Chris Columbus, who wrote the screenplay for the film, recalled that the late director called Donner after his death to discuss a sequel to “The Goonies.”

“He called me and said, ‘You know what we should do? We should get on my boat, smoke weed for three days and come up with an idea for ‘Goonies 2,’” Columbus, 65, told Empire magazine in 2021.

“I said to Dick, ‘Well, first of all, I don’t smoke weed. But maybe when I come down, we’ll have a few drinks together and sit on the boat.’ That never happened. And I regret it. Because I would drop everything to do that now.”

Most of the cast of “The Goonies” reunited virtually in 2020 for Josh Gad’s web series, with Spielberg, 77, explaining why a sequel hasn’t happened yet.

“Every few years we have an idea, but then it turns out to be wrong,” he said.

“The problem is the bar that you’ve all set for this genre. I don’t think we’ve really managed to come up with an idea that’s better than The Goonies, which we all made in the ’80s,” Spielberg added.
