Observations from the Detroit Lions’ Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams

Touchdown is about to happen: It was good to see Week 1 with the bright lights on what we’ve seen from Jameson Williams throughout the offseason workout program and training camp. The third-year wide receiver had five catches for 121 yards with a 52-yard touchdown catch behind the defense. Things have been really good from Williams since March, and when I spoke to him after the game, he still felt like he left a lot more plays on the field. That should be exciting for the Lions going forward, as he played a career-high 52 snaps against the Rams (85 percent of the offensive plays).

“I’m expecting a big match personally, I think, it’s just big for the world because it’s my first,” Williams said afterwards. “But I plan on playing many more. I don’t expect this to be the best match of my career. I expect this to just be a start of being myself.”

There’s a big play coming up: Second-year safety Brian Branch is going to watch the tape from Sunday’s game and probably wonder, “What if?” We can see why the Lions value Branch so much as a safety. He’s so instinctive. He had a chance to make a couple interceptions in the game that could have been huge plays. Those are coming. Lions fans are going to enjoy seeing No. 32 running around the back of the defense.

Branch finished the game with seven tackles, one for loss, and three passes defended, making him the first Lions safety to finish a game with three passes defended and a tackle for loss.
