Supermoon followed by a partial lunar eclipse

The second of four consecutive supermoons will soon grace the skies of western Michigan.

Supermoons appear larger because their orbit makes them lie closer to Earth.

Our Harvest Moon can appear anywhere from 10-15% closer than normal and up to 30% brighter. These facts are courtesy of NASA.

After Tuesday night, the next supermoons are on October 17 and November 15.

Immediately after the full moon is reached, a partial lunar eclipse occurs.

The greatest solar eclipse will occur on Tuesday at 10:44 p.m.

The conjunction of the Sun, Earth and Moon, which are not perfectly aligned, allows for a partial lunar eclipse to occur.

Due to the imperfections, only 8% of the Moon will be in complete shadow.

The good news is that our skies will be clear to mostly clear when the moon becomes full and when the partial lunar eclipse begins.

The eclipse ends shortly after midnight on Wednesday at 12:47 a.m.
