Sports Fans Frustrated by Disney-DirecTV Dispute: What You Need to Know

BOCA RATON, Fla. — The ongoing dispute between Disney and DirecTV has left millions of TV viewers without access to their favorite sports and primetime programming since Sunday.

We know that many sports fans have been looking forward to this time of year all summer to enjoy sports, such as football.

As the blackout continues into the week, frustrations are mounting, particularly among football fans eagerly awaiting the start of the season. Other viewers looking forward to upcoming events like the presidential debate and various awards shows are also growing frustrated.

WPTV News reporter Victor Jorges spoke with Gerald Kleynhans of Port St. Lucie, who said he is annoyed about missing the Florida State football game last week because of the power outage. Kleynhans is also concerned about missing important events, including the presidential debate, which airs next Tuesday on ABC.

“I can’t look at that and select a good candidate to come forward,” Kleynhans said. He also spoke of his wife’s disappointment at missing Monday’s season finale of “The Bachelorette.”

The power outage is putting local businesses, especially sports bars, in a difficult position.

Chris Torelli, managing partner at Hooters in Boca Raton, said his establishment plans to handle the disruption with transparency and patience, and he hopes customers will do the same.

“We have a list of 37 games that we have available, and if that one game is not available, that means the world to that fan,” Torelli said.

Torelli said he expects issues will arise as the football season progresses and stakes increase, even though other sports programming is still available.

“There are a few dates and competitions that we have mentioned that pose potential problems,” Torelli said.

Torelli said the blackout is affecting everyone, whether at home or in public places. He is also a sports fan. He said if he couldn’t watch the games at work, he would watch them at home, just like everyone else.

How did we get here? Both companies keep blaming each other.

DirecTV said Disney is forcing consumers to pay for channels they don’t watch, while Disney said DirecTV’s offerings undervalue its portfolio. For now, customers are left in the dark, with DirecTV offering a $20 credit on next month’s bill, an offer many, like the Kleynhans, find insufficient.

For those sitting in front of a blank screen, there may be some relief in the form of alternative programming on NBC, FOX and CBS. But for sports fans, especially those looking forward to Monday night games, this dispute will have to wait a little longer for it to be resolved.
