Things got chaotic in Saturday night’s SMU vs. Nevada game. First up, the Mustangs receiver Jordan Hudson a Nevada player on the helmet, causing him to be drilled by another Wolfpack player. And a scuffle ensued between the two teams. Then in the second half, in one of the game’s strangest penalties, SMU corner Brandon Crossley was ejected for spitting on a Nevada player.

The cameras missed it completely, so there’s no video. SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee was furious about the decision to remove Crossley and argued with officials for several minutes. It didn’t change their minds at all.

The penalty was absolutely huge, as it extended Nevada’s drive on fourth down. The Wolfpack eventually drove all the way down the field and scored a touchdown, extending their lead to 24-13 late in the third quarter on Saturday.

Nevada’s defense gave the SMU offense all sorts of problems in the first half, forcing an interception of the ball. Preston Stone (he almost threw two more). Kevin Jennings came in for the Mustangs and sparked some drives. Both quarterbacks were in and out of the game for much of the first half. With 4:00 left in the second quarter, the game was tied at 10-10.

The problems weren’t just on offense in the first half, the SMU secondary left a Nevada receiver wide open deep down the field on a play. And there was also a botched snap on a punt that gave the Wolfpack a big field advantage, allowing them to run the ball in for a 7-0 lead over the Mustangs.

SMU also received numerous penalties in the first half.

Nevada had over 100 rushing yards in the first half. Quarterback Brendon Lewis had over 100 all-purpose yards and two total touchdowns. The Mustangs just couldn’t find an answer to stop him. And the Wolfpack took a 17-10 lead with less than 10 seconds left in the first half.
