Sherrone Moore evaluates Michigan QB’s play after three-interception game

Michigan quarterback Davis Warren was 11-of-14 for 122 yards with three interceptions in Michigan’s 28-18 win over Arkansas State on Saturday. Warren now has six interceptions this season in three games.

After Warren’s third interception, quarterback Alex Orji took over and completed 2 of 4 passes for 12 yards, with a passing touchdown and 27 rushing yards.

After the game, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was asked about Warren’s performance and the three interceptions.

“Just can’t have them,” Moore said. “They put the ball in jeopardy way too many times. We made the change and we’re going to keep practicing and keep moving forward.”

When asked if there are more opportunities in the pipeline for Orji, Moore said they’ll find out in practice.

“Just not great to put on film,” Moore said of Warren’s interceptions. “I was surprised. But that’s football. Things like that happen and we had to make a change.”

While it wasn’t a day to remember for Warren, Moore was generally pleased with Orji’s limited play.

“He played well,” Moore said. “He had the overthrow, but he wanted to let it go and get some confidence. He did a good job of managing it and taking care of the ball, which is the biggest thing I want our program to do. We’ll see where we go from there.”

The big question is what happens next for Michigan. Next week they play an important game in the Big Ten Conference at Michigan Stadium against USC.

While Orji replaced Warren against Arkansas State, Jack Tuttle’s name shouldn’t be forgotten in the equation. Tuttle was Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy’s backup last season, going 15 of 17 for 130 yards with one passing touchdown. Michigan offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell said Monday that Tuttle could be back in action soon after an injury-riddled offseason.

“We’re hoping he’ll be able to play and potentially play games if he ever earns that position this week or at USC,” Campbell said.

Michigan needs to have a sense of urgency at quarterback, and at every other position for that matter. Ball security is extremely important and Michigan will happily hire a quarterback who is considered a “game manager” if it means limiting turnovers, scoring points and winning games.

“Part of it was protection, but at the end of the day, we’ve got to take care of the ball. We can’t have those turnovers,” Moore said. “We pride ourselves on not doing that. Most of the time, when we take care of the ball, we win, so that’s what we try to do.”

While progress in the passing game was disappointing today, Moore believes better times are ahead in that area.

“We’re getting better in the passing game and we’re continuing to improve,” Moore said.

However, the question remains who will lead the attack.
