Robert Saleh says he was blindsided by Woody Johnson’s firing

Robert Saleh had no idea he would be fired this morning.

Saleh told Jay Glazer of Fox Sports that he was blindsided when Jets owner Woody Johnson walked into his office and fired him today.

Heading into this season, Saleh thought he had a very good roster, and he thought that roster would give him a longer chance to win than he did. Instead, Saleh is fired after a 2-3 start to the season.

Johnson would likely counter this by saying that Saleh has plenty of time to build his team in New York, and that his 20-36 record as head coach of the Jets is clearly not good enough.

Saleh was the 49ers’ defensive coordinator for four years before Johnson hired him as the Jets’ head coach, and will likely look for another defensive coordinator job soon. For now, he’s in a place where he thought he had job security.
