Rich Homie Quan, Atlanta Rap Visionary, Dies at 34

The rapper’s unique voice and lyrical ingenuity have left their mark on modern hip-hop

Rich Homie Quan, who made rap hits in the 2010s as a solo artist and member of Atlanta’s Rich Gang, died Thursday at the age of 34. A family member confirmed Quan’s death to Rolling Stone, but a cause of death was not immediately known.

Born Dequantes Lamar, Rich Homie Quan broke out into the mainstream in 2013 with the catchy songs “Type of Way” and YG’s “My Nigga,” though he had already gained a following in his hometown of Atlanta in 2008 with the song “Stay Down” with the Stack Money Boyz. In interviews, Lamar has been candid about the lugging and robbing he endured β€” in 2011, at age 21, he was locked up in the DeKalb County Jail for 15 months. He said XXL that he found solace in books by James Patterson and Sandra Brown and in writing songs.

Upon his release, Quan made a series of mixtapes about β€œGoing In β€” working hard for great results β€” starting in 2012 I respond to every song and continue with tapes like Still working: reloaded, I promise I will never stop coming in, if you ever think I will stop coming in just ask RR (his son) and ABTA: Still working. Upon its release in 2013, “Type of Way” went gold and garnered remixes from trap hero Jeezy and Meek Mill. “Type of Way” was followed by the hits “Walk Thru” featuring Compton rapper Problem and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015. (The latter was made famous by a viral dance.)

When Birdman fronted the supergroup Rich Gang, Lamar became a standout on songs like “Lifestyle” featuring Young Thug, with whom he made the bulk of the 2014 mixtape Rich Gang: The Tour Part 1. Throughout his career, Lamar has also collaborated with Gucci Mane, Trinidad James, 2 Chainz, Migos, T.I., Lil Uzi Vert and more. In 2018, he released his debut studio album, Rich as in Spirit.
