Ravens beat Cowboys, Chiefs make their case

Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts all in action in the NFL

The third week in the NFL was another thriller, with six teams picking up their first win of the season, four suffering their first loss and some frantic closing stages.

The Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Rams started well, only to inflict further misery on the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers after opposing comeback attempts.

The Denver Broncos, who had not won a game until then, defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while the New York Giants, who had been outgunned until then, scored an unexpected victory in Cleveland.

Even the much-maligned Carolina Panthers had a win, beating the Las Vegas Raiders, who pulled off a stunning comeback victory last week in Baltimore.

The Kansas City Chiefs are now 3-0 and the surprising Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings are also undefeated thanks to their impressive defenses that continue to dominate.

Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson combined for 238 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while the Ravens ran the ball on 45 of 60 plays, exposing the Cowboys’ weakness in the running department.

Quarterback Jackson has led his team in rushing for the past five seasons, but with Henry, the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player won’t have to do it all himself. Henry had his 12th career game with 150 yards and two TDs — just one shy of Jim Brown’s all-time record.

Dallas scored 19 points out of nowhere in the fourth quarter and after Baltimore blew a 10-point lead last week, the nerves were there, but the Ravens earned their first win of the season, holding on for a 28-25 victory.

Like Dallas, San Francisco also lost two games in a row, despite taking a 14-0 lead against the injury-plagued Rams, before pulling off a dramatic 27-24 victory after a chaotic final few minutes.

Jauan Jennings had a monster 175-yard, three-touchdown game for the injury-battled Niners, and Kyren Williams scored a hat trick for the Rams, who matched their rivals with a 1-2 record behind a late Williams goal and a later Joshua Karty field goal.

Chiefs defense holds up in Atlanta

Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes, but the Super Bowl champions had to rely on their defense to get over the line in a thrilling 22-17 upset of the Atlanta Falcons, making it 3-0.

Mahomes wasn’t at his best and Travis Kelce had another quiet game, but the defense came to their rescue with two saves in the final minutes, allowing the Falcons to keep scoring.

Atlanta head coach Raheem Morris may regret not kicking a field goal in the final period, as they failed to score a touchdown from six yards out. But it’s a good sign for the future that they matched the champions throughout the game.

Defense leads undefeated Steelers, Vikings and Seahawks

The other three teams that went 3-0 on Sunday are a bit more surprising, but the defensive units of Pittsburgh and Minnesota in particular make them both teams to fear now.

The Vikings notched their biggest win in five years with a 34-7 dismantling of the previously undefeated Texans. C.J. Stroud had two interceptions and four sacks in a one-sided game.

TJ Watt continues to lead the Steelers’ stingy defense, which has now allowed just 26 points through three games following a 20-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mike Tomlin’s team has reached the playoffs after starting all three games 3-0. And with backup QB Justin Fields having his best game of the season, they’re likely just getting started.

The Seattle Seahawks became the first team since 1979 to start 3-0 and allow fewer than 150 passing yards in every game. However, they were helped by the fact that the Miami Dolphins had to use their third-choice QB in their 24-3 loss.

Eagles sink Saints, Packers are the real deal

The Philadelphia Eagles responded to Monday’s painful loss in Atlanta by holding the New Orleans Saints offense, which had scored 91 points in two games, in check to win a defensive battle in the Superdome, 15-12.

Three touchdowns came in the fourth quarter after only three points had been scored before. Saquon Barkley showed why the Eagles brought him on with a game-winning 65-yard touchdown run, the first of his two scores.

Despite losing their season opener to the Eagles, the Green Bay Packers still appear to be serious contenders after backup quarterback Malik Willis led them to a 30-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Titans quarterback Will Levis was taken to task by the Packers defense, who tackled him eight times and threw two interceptions, helping Green Bay continue to win without star forward Jordan Love.

Carolina’s controversial decision to bench former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young paid off, with veteran replacement Andy Dalton becoming the first quarterback this season to throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in a game and leading the Panthers to their first win of the season.

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce was furious about his team’s lackluster response to last week’s thrilling win, but the Panthers didn’t care and won 36-22.

The New York Giants botched a kickoff and fell behind after just 11 seconds in Cleveland, but two touchdowns from rookie receiver Malik Nabers helped them to a 21-15 comeback victory.

Nabers appears to be a star in the making, as he became the first player to catch 20-plus passes for 250-plus yards and three or more touchdowns in his first three games.

Bo Nix earned his first win as quarterback for the Denver Broncos in their victory over Tampa Bay. Caleb Williams threw his first touchdown passes, but the Chicago Bears lost at the Indianapolis Colts and the Detroit Lions got back on track with a win at the Arizona Cardinals.
