Quick Reactions: Detroit decimates Macdonald’s depleted Seahawks defense

Well, that was ugly.

The Seattle Seahawks took to Ford Field on Monday Night Football with a chance to announce to the world that they had arrived as undefeated competitors. Instead, the short defense allowed the Detroit Lions to put 42 points on the board while moving the ball at a rate of 7.8 yards per play. Jared Goff finished a big night 18 of 18 for 292 yards and a pair of touchdowns, along with a touchdown reception of his own on a seven-yard completion from Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Seattle fans will be quick to point out that the loss came because the team was missing five key members of the defensive front seven, and that is absolutely true. However, at the end of the day, the players the Hawks put on the court defensively not only couldn’t bring the ball down, they weren’t even close, as Detroit moved the ball almost at will and consistently generated explosive plays.

On offense, the Seahawks were on the field 90 times, indicative of a group that regularly generates first downs and maintains possession. That’s exactly what Seattle did with over 500 yards of offense and 34 minutes of possession, but they simply made too many mistakes even with Geno Smith and many of the offensive linemen playing every second.

Perhaps most notable on the offensive side of things is that Christian Haynes saw his first extended action in the rotation with Anthony Bradford, with Haynes playing 36 snaps. On the other hand, even though he wasn’t a healthy scratch for the first time in several games, Olu Oluwatimi adapted but did not see the field upon a return to the state where he played in his sixth season of college football.

Moving to the defensive end, the coaching staff leaned heavily on the veterans of Dre’Mont Jones, Jonathan Hankins and Jarran Reed up front, with Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy out. That’s certainly not a definitive statement, but it shows what the staff thinks of youngsters like Mike Morris and Myles Adams, who played less than would probably be expected given the absence of key starters up front.

Moving onto special teams, as Jake Bobo took on a bigger offensive role, his role on special teams shrunk somewhat. Likewise, Dareke Young saw a drop in his special teams contributions, without any increase in usage on offense.

Drake Thomas continued to pace all special teamers in snaps played, with Brady Russell and Coby Bryant making up the top three, and Kenny McIntosh seeing an increased special teams role.

And now it’s time for the New York Giants.
