Preston Stone ready for BYU challenge, praises team’s progress

SMU Mustangs quarterback Preston Stone addressed the media today and shared his insights on the upcoming game against BYU, the Mustangs’ impressive performance against Houston Christian and the transition to the ACC.

Stone acknowledged the challenge BYU poses and emphasized their disciplined defense.

“They’re a very good team… The defense plays very disciplined, they don’t beat themselves,” he noted, recalling a close game against BYU two years ago.

He stressed that SMU must act consistently in critical situations.

“I think it comes down to us being consistent, out-disciplined and doing our job.”

Stone praised the team’s balanced attacking approach against Houston Christian.

“We ran almost 400 meters… split between three guys, which was really impressive,” he said.

He also highlighted the involvement of ten different receivers, which underscored the team’s depth and selfless culture.

“It says a lot about the guys we have… that we can distribute the ball without egos getting in the way,” Stone noted.

Stone also praised the defense’s stellar performance, allowing just seven points and 34 yards rushing.

“Our defense has kept us in the game every year,” he said, drawing parallels to last season, and expects them to continue to dominate in the games ahead.

Looking back on the team’s progress, Stone said, “I think we’ve definitely made a big step.” He acknowledged areas for improvement, saying, “There’s still a lot of room for improvement, both for me and for us as a team.”

When asked what the key is to a fast start on offense, Stone emphasized execution and avoiding penalties.

“We absolutely have to stay ahead of the curve… and make sure our game plan is right,” he said.

Regarding the challenging 10-game Power 4 conference schedule, Stone said the team is focused on the task at hand.

“Once you get into the moment and once the ball is thrown, it’s just a different team no matter who you’re playing,” he said.
