49ers star ends holdout, gets new deal

play

The San Francisco 49ers can still start the first week well.

As their season opener against the New York Jets on “Monday Night Football” approaches, the reigning NFC champions are close to finalizing a contract extension with All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, according to his agency, Elite Loyalty Sports.

Williams, previously the league’s highest-paid offensive lineman and widely regarded as its best left tackle, had fallen to sixth in average annual salary ($23 million per year) this past year. He sat out of training camp to seek a new deal after tackles Tristan Wirfs, Penei Sewell and Christian Darrisaw surpassed him on the pay scale during the offseason. Wirfs of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is currently the highest-paid blocker at $28.1 million per year after signing a five-year, $140.6 million extension.

The 49ers have been juggling competing priorities in recent weeks, but finally reached a contract extension with wideout Brandon Aiyuk on Thursday, ending his hold-in.

Now Williams is set to rejoin the fold, not a week before the Niners make their final push to win a record-tying sixth Super Bowl. And his presence is surely portentous of the team’s success, as San Francisco suffered four of its five regular-season losses in 2023 when Williams was inactive (twice) or not on the field for at least half the snaps.

Williams, an 11-time Pro Bowler and first-round draft pick by Washington in 2010, was recently voted the league’s seventh-best player by his peers in an annual NFL Network poll, the highest ranking ever achieved by an offensive lineman.
