Pittsburgh Steelers QB enters Drew Bledsoe territory

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields isn’t having the greatest performance of all time, but he’s certainly given the team food for thought. And with a 2-0 record entering their home opener, many are wondering when Russell Wilson will get on the field this season — if he does at all.

Former NFL superstar Shannon Sharpe thinks Wilson could be in trouble. As he recovers from his calf injury, Fields will remain the starting center, and the more Fields does to impress, the less likely Wilson is to see the field this season.

“As long as Justin Fields doesn’t regress to the Justin Fields of Chicago where he loses the ball, he’s fine. I don’t see Russell taking the job away from him,” Sharpe said on his Nightcap podcast.

Sharpe believes Wilson is entering Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady territory.

“I remember Jerry Jones saying that about Tony Romo when he got healthy, got that job back, and told the people back home that that didn’t exist back then and that wasn’t Nightcap,” Sharpe said. “When Tony Romo got healthy, what did he do?

“What did Coach (Bill) Belichick do when Drew Bledsoe got injured? Oh yeah. What had to happen?”

The Steelers haven’t definitively said Wilson is the guaranteed starter once he’s fit. Fields and the offense are slowly finding their feet, but with just one touchdown in two games, there’s still work to be done.

That said, the longer the Steelers wait, the better the opportunity becomes for Fields. And all he has to do is show Pittsburgh that he can win for this team, and they’ll make sure their QB decision remains up in the air.

Now we’ll have to wait and see if Fields is the starter in Week 3, or if Wilson’s return comes closer as the season progresses.
