SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The arrest of a young suspect in a case involving online shootings against more than half a dozen San Antonio schools comes as a relief to some parents.

San Antonio police announced Sunday night that they had located the 12-year-old boy with the help of the Texas Rangers and officers from several local school districts.

The threats were made in an online post that was widely circulated over the weekend.

It includes a photo of a gun and the names of seven local schools, along with dates and citations of school shootings.

According to the SAPD, investigators determined that the threats, which raised concerns among some parents, were not credible.

A preliminary police report indicates that the arrested suspect was not carrying any weapons.

“Even if he was angry for whatever reason, there is no threat to the school,” Mark Reyes said Monday morning as he dropped his child off at Jeremiah Rhodes Middle School.

Rhodes was one of four schools in the San Antonio Independent School District placed on the endangered list.

Other schools in that district mentioned include Tafolla Middle School, Sarah King Elementary School and Estrada Achievement Center.

Additionally, Alonso S. Perales Elementary School in Edgewood ISD, Abraham Kazen Middle School in South San Antonio ISD and IDEA Public Schools were also threatened.

On the campus of at least one school, Rhodes, school police made their presence known as students arrived Monday morning.

Reyes says while he feels some relief, the threats still make him feel uneasy.

“I wonder, ‘Did he have a friend who stood behind him, who wanted to do it too? Was he the only one?’” he said.

SAISD attempted to reassure parents with a message on its website, which also questioned the validity of the threats.

KSAT 12 News sent requests to all school districts named in the online threats.

SAISD promised a statement, but it had not been issued by Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson also did not respond to specific questions, including whether the suspect might have been a SAISD student.

Edgewood ISD provided the following email statement:

“The safety and security of Edgewood ISD students, staff, and faculty is the district’s highest priority. We are grateful to the EISD Police Department and other law enforcement agencies for their swift action regarding the online threat against EISD and other local school districts. Potential threats are taken seriously and EISD will continue to take the necessary security measures to protect our students, staff, and faculty.”

IDEA Public Schools also responded by email, saying it was aware of the threat and an investigation was underway.

A spokeswoman said that after police determined the threat was not credible, IDEA schools “were cleared to resume normal operations and will continue to prioritize the safety of our students and staff.”

South San Antonio ISD did not respond to emails or phone calls.

Because the suspect is so old, police have not released his name.

Jill Mata, director of Bexar County Juvenile Probation, told KSAT 12 News that confidentiality laws prevent her from commenting on specific cases involving minors, including this one.

However, she said it is the court hearings and assessments that determine what happens in terms of punishment or sentencing.

In a case like this, involving a charge of terrorist threats and a 12-year-old suspect, a prison sentence is generally not possible, according to Mata.

Reyes says that despite the fear he felt from the threats, he does not want the suspect to receive a harsh sentence.

“I think they should keep him off school campuses. You know, maybe homeschool him,” Reyes said.
