‘No Place Like Nebraska’ documentary offers ‘unvarnished’ look inside Huskers volleyball program

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Huskers volleyball team is back in the spotlight.

Sunday marks the premiere of “No Place Like Nebraska,” ESPN’s documentary about the Huskers’ 2023 season. The project takes fans behind the scenes of the record-breaking campaign that culminated in a run to the NCAA championship game. But the focus of the piece may be different than what Nebraska fans expect.

“This documentary gives a more personal look into their lives,” said co-director Jen Karson-Strauss. “Even if you think you know Harper Murray or Merritt Beason or even John Cook, this gives you a look behind the scenes in a more personal way.”

This is the first E60 for co-director Maddie Rundlett, who first pitched the idea ahead of Nebraska Volleyball Day.

“When we actually saw it happen, we thought, ‘This is clearly something very special and very rare,'” she said. “We really dug into the history and culture of the team. That idea is how we got into the program and started working with it.”

The documentary also promises candid conversations with Murray and Cook about the star player’s offseason legal troubles and how her mental health was affected by the widespread hate on social media following the national championship.

“That was something that Harper really came to us for,” Karson-Strauss said. “She was, perhaps to the surprise of Husker fans, the one who wanted to talk about her story and the ways she could have done better and how those things had affected her life.”

“No Place Like Nebraska” airs Sunday at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN. An extended version will be available afterward on ESPN+.
