No. 3 Texas beats No. 10 Michigan 31-12, hands Wolverines first home loss since 2020

Michigan’s 16-game winning streak has finally ended.

For the first time since 2022, Michigan found itself on the losing side of the scoreboard as quarterback Quinn Ewers and the No. 3 Texas Longhorns defeated the No. 10 Wolverines 31-12 on Saturday at Michigan Stadium. The loss was Michigan’s first in the Big House since 2020.

Ewers — a former Buckeye — tore through Michigan’s vaunted secondary for 246 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Longhorns to the blowout win. In addition to Ewers’ dominance through the air, the Texas defense shut down Michigan’s struggling offense — holding the Wolverines to just 284 total yards and a 3-of-12 mark on third downs while limiting quarterback Davis Warren to 204 passing yards while throwing two interceptions for one touchdown.

The Longhorns drew first blood late in the first quarter with a 23-yard touchdown from Ewers to senior tight end Gunnar Helm. Michigan quickly responded with a field goal on the ensuing drive, but the well ran dry for the Wolverine offense after that.

Aided by a pair of takeaways, the Longhorns closed the half with 17 unanswered points — including a five-yard touchdown reception from junior wideout Matthew Golden with 10 seconds left in the half — to enter the locker room with a 24-3 lead over the reigning national champions.

After kicker Dominic Zvada made a 52-yard field goal to cut the lead to 18, Ewers led the Longhorns’ offense 75 yards in less than three minutes to extend the lead to 31-6 late in the third quarter.

The Wolverines finally reached the end zone with 1:52 left on a 31-yard touchdown from Warren to wideout Semaj Morgan. It came too late for Michigan, however, as Texas ran out the clock on its next drive and won 31-12 in the Big House.

Michigan will look to get back on track next week against Arkansas State — with another key game against No. 13 USC on Sept. 21 — while Texas gets another early-season prep against UTSA.
