    Patrick Mahomes knows it.

    The Kansas City Chiefs continue to win as they enter the 2024 NFL season, but their star quarterback hasn’t quite hit his stride through three games.

    “I feel like I didn’t play that well, and that has nothing to do with stats,” Mahomes admitted after the Chiefs extended their record to 3-0 with a narrow 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.

    The stats also support Mahomes’ analysis. He’s currently on pace for a career low in yards and a career high in interceptions through three games. Even more telling is where he ranks against other quarterbacks in ESPN’s QBR (quarterback rating) heading into Week 4.

    While the top of the QBR rankings is still littered with rebuilding projects like Derek Carr, Sam Darnold and Malik Willis, Mahomes sits at No. 18 in QBR entering Week 4, currently trailing the likes of Jacoby Brissett, Bo Nix and Daniel Jones in the metric. Keep in mind that since becoming the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, Mahomes had never finished outside the top five in QBR until last season, when he was No. 8. He still leads the league in QBR in 2022.

    ESPN’s QBR, Explained

    Every week, ESPN gives each quarterback a QBR for their final performance. According to ESPN, the rating is meant to “encompass all of a quarterback’s contributions to winning, including how he impacts the game with passing, rushing, turnovers and penalties.”

    QBR measures the success of each play and how much credit the quarterback deserves for the play. The stat also takes into account the strength of opposing defenses. The final result is an efficiency rating as a number on a scale of 0 to 100. The cumulative rating is averaged per play over the course of the season.
