The league has imposed two suspensions on cornerbacks currently on the free agent market. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, former Patriots cornerback JC Jackson received a one-game suspension, while the former Jaguars cornerback Chris Kleibrooks received an eight-match suspension.

Jackson is struggling to come to an end in his second stint in New England. After an impressive four years that saw him go from undrafted free agent to second-team All Pro and Pro Bowler, Jackson signed a massive five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Chargers in 2022. But Jackson struggled in Los Angeles, getting benched and eventually rupturing his patellar tendon.

Midway through last year, the Chargers traded Jackson back to New England along with a seventh-round pick, receiving only a sixth-round pick in return. After a season-ending injury to the rookie first-round pick Christian GonzálezThe Patriots hoped that Jackson could return to his old dominance and step in as a starter. Mental health issues and a series of broken team rules led to some discipline from his own team. Combined with a history of off-field problems in college, Jackson’s problems led to his dismissal from the Patriots after the season ended.

Jackson’s suspension stems from a warrant issued for his arrest in Massachusetts last September. He became wanted after he failed to appear for a court hearing in connection with a reckless driving and speeding incident in 2021. If Jackson signs with a team soon, he will be eligible to play in the remainder of the preseason, but he will have to sit out Week 1 and make his season debut in Week 2.

Claybrooks was a seventh-round pick in 2020 out of Jacksonville. He started four of 13 games as a rookie and followed that up with two starts in 16 games the following year. His role on defense continued to diminish in 2022, as he appeared in every game but made no starts.

Beginning in the 2023 midseason, Claybrooks began exhibiting troubling behavior. He was arrested in Nashville on charges of domestic violence with bodily injury and vandalism under $1,000 for allegedly grabbing a cell phone from a woman’s hand and throwing it to the ground. Three months later, Claybrooks was arrested a second time, this time in Duval, and this time for domestic violence. As a result, the Jaguars placed Claybrooks on the Commissioner Exempt list and he did not appear in a game last season.

The suspension for his actions is eight games, but since he spent the entirety of last season on the exempt list, the league will consider his eight-game suspension to be full due to time served. Should Claybrooks ultimately sign with a team, he would be eligible to play immediately. However, he faces a tough task returning to any team after two separate arrests this past offseason.
